ACT Prep

Preparation for the shorter, redesigned ACT.

Core sections

English, Math, Reading

Optional

Science, Writing

Score range

1–36

The ACT changed in 2025. The core test is now English, Math and Reading, it takes about two hours instead of three, and Science became optional. Students who ruled out the ACT a year or two ago may find the current version suits them better than the SAT.

What the test looks like now

  • English, Math and Reading make up the composite score
  • Science and the Writing essay are optional add-ons
  • Around two hours for the core test, down from about three
  • Fewer questions per section, with a little more time for each
  • Available on paper or online, depending on the test center

SAT or ACT?

Colleges accept either, and most students do better on one than the other. The ACT moves quickly and rewards students who read and calculate fast; the SAT adapts as you go and allows more time per question. A practice test of each usually settles it, and we can run both before you commit to a plan.

How we prepare students

  • A diagnostic practice test to set the plan
  • Timing drills for English and Reading, where pacing decides the score
  • Math review focused on the topics that come up most
  • Science practice if the colleges on your list ask for it
  • Full practice tests along the way to track progress
